New Kickz..."Thrashin Beast"

A few weeks ago I was sitting on my chaise lounge in my studio trying to think of an idea for my newest design and after hours of forcing an idea to come to me I finally told myself when you got it and it feels right, you'll know so I began flipping through an old Sole Collector Magazine (Issue 23 – Nike Dunk SB Special) and that's when I saw the "Thrashin" Dunk Hi's... The flow of the pattern instantly inspired the concept for my swoosh. Naturally, I wanted to put my own spin on it so I incorporated my "Beast" crawl pattern, thicken up the lines so it would be different from my original "Beast" customs and decided to tone down the colors giving it a Black and white feel.
Once I created the Blueprint, stuck it on my wall and took a few steps back to view it from a distance it felt right and from there the FlyKickz "Thrashin Beast" customs were created so big thanks to Nike and the Sole Collector Magazine for being an inspiration for my newest design.

The Recap: Dunkxchange NYC

This past Saturday I had the opportunity to paint LIVE again at Dunkxchange New York. To be able to sit in a building filled with hundreds of people coming in and out of the Chelsea Museum Art Doors, having the chance to show them what I do when I'm alone in my studio and have them respond to my work in a such a positive way was amazing.

When I create a canvas live there are NO rules. I don't always know how I'm going to paint a design, what colors I will use on various parts of the canvas or if it will even be exactly as I envisioned it, I just let the music playing in the background and my intuition guide me but to be honest I wouldn't want it any other way.

For years the Dunkxchange events has always been a show that I've looked forward to attending. The crowd, venues, performers, DJ's and vendors create a scene that captures the ART, Culture & SOLE of what I do and for that reason I'm looking forward to doing more of these shows.

This event was definitely a success...TO everyone who came out, had a great time and showed their support Thank you... and to Everyone who took time time to check out my work at the event I appreciate the support you all continue to show FlyKickz.

On March 30th 2008 I remember going to my first sneaker event in New York by myself, standing in line and waiting to enter Crash Mansion to attend an event called the Dunkxchange . Around that time I had just customized a design called "Gucci Links" on a pair of all white Nike Dunk Lo's and I was excited about wearing them because up until then I didn't really have a pair of customs that captured my style.

Dunkxchange was the first sneaker event I had ever attended and March 30th was the last time I ever waited in line for the event because on Oct 5th 2008 I was apart of my very 1st DXC and every since then I've been apart of as many shows as possible.

I've had my share of Dunkxchange's over the years whether it was held at different locations, seeing different vendors, meeting new faces and watching companies come and go a few things remained the same and that was my luv for kickz, my work & DXC. Of all the venues I've been to and believe me I've been to a few, the Chelsea Art Museum this Past Saturday 9/24/2011 was by far my favorite. The atmosphere was incredible, to see so many people come out to support the event and have a great time was enough to make me realize even more why I love doing what I do.

That day was a day of many firsts for me…It was the first time my company logo had ever been put on a Dunkxchange flyer and I had a hard copy to keep and hang up on my wall, it was the first time I had ever painted LIVE because for so many years I was use to painting alone in my studio and it was the 1st day I sold one of my FlyKickz Sneaker Art pieces and realized it isn't always easy to part with the pieces you Luv but I quickly reminded myself I could paint this again. I was very satisfied with the outcome of this event and I know from here it can only get better for FlyKickz.

Thank you again to all the people who stopped by my table, checked out my work and gave me a few words of encouragement, I thank you all for continuing to support FlyKickz and Thanks again to the good people of Dunkxchange for allowing me to be apart of this event and the many more to come!

Kiss my Kickz...Revived

"Kiss My Kickz"

I remember when I came up with the concept for the original "Kiss My Kickz" back in 2008, I was sitting in my room looking at these Dunk High's that I recently purchased thinking about my next idea. I didn't have much to go on expect that I wanted this design to be different from my previous work but creative in the idea execution. After a few minutes of brainstorming I started looking up a few ideas regarding lips when I decided I'd use my own. I put on my favorite lip gloss, kissed a piece of paper and within a few seconds the idea was created. I had finally made a design that was exactly as I imagined in my head not to mention it was one of my best designs at that time. I wore these sneakers at every event and when I was doing promo. Me and these sneakers we were like Dorothy and those red slippers…Inseparable.

After wearing these sneakers into the ground I knew I had to retire them but I still loved them nonetheless so I built a shelf and placed them neatly on my art studio wall to remind me of my first FlyKickz sneaker love…

I finally decided a few days ago it was time to bring them back as I had done with my "FishScale Coral Reefs" and make them apart of my 2011 edition.

This time around with the new "Kiss my Kickz" I decided to do more color changes to the original sneaker and alter it just a bit to make this new edition a little better but still managing to stick to the original concept. I already had the right sneaker to work on the Nike Dunk High so all I needed were a few new paint brushes, the right colors and everything came full circle. After a few days of painting the 2011 editions were finally completed.

A few weeks ago I was flipping through a magazine called "The inFamous"

(The Infamous= This awesome Graffiti Lifestyle magazine I saw sitting on the shelf at this book store and instantly feel in love with!

As I was flipping through the pages checking out all these great pieces of work I came across this event called the Jersey Fresh Jam. I must admit I couldn't contain myself because this event was being held in the city I grew up Trenton,NJ and a few months back I did a photo shoot at the very place where the event was being held TerraCycle.

Maybe it was fate or mere luck but whatever it was I knew I wanted to be apart of the event so I sprung into action and a few days later I got the word that FlyKickz was in!

The Jersey Fresh Jam is New Jersey's premiere Hip Hop festival. Since 2005, this gathering has grown from a small, humble event into one of the most respected celebrations of Hip Hop culture on the east coast. At the twilight of every summer, aerosol artists from far and wide converge to adorn the walls of Terracycle INC with their signature masterpieces, while local and regionally known emcees, bands, and DJs provide the soundtrack for the days festivities.This event is free and open to the public. A piece of my own

On July 15, 2011 after 2 hours of painting I finally had a creative a piece of my own….

I remember being at a sneaker event 4 years ago and being handled this flyer and thinking how cool the idea or combining several different sneakers together to form one was. I've held on to this flyer for some time, even framed it and placed it on my art studio walls thinking to myself one day I would combine my own designs forming one very Creative Dunk.

I wanted to pick a collection of work that I considered to be some of my best projects and that's the reason I chose "Beast", the original "FishScale Coral Reefs", "Abstracts", and Geisha Girls". Each of these designs took 15 to 20 to complete, required a lot of detailing and were done using a very small paint brush not to mention they were all done on my favorite sneaker the NIKE Dunk High.

My New Dunks!

To the smallest Dunk High's I currently own... I remember seeing your box in the store way in the back of the room and my heart skipping a beat way before I even took you out the box. I've searched for you for a few months and it wasn't easy but I now have you in my possession so thank you Nike for making them available to me 2 Thumbs up! LOL

I thought painting these little sneakers would be easy but I soon discovered they would require a lot of time and patience. I wanted the design to be something I would wear and I had the right concept in mind the "Coral Reefs". A few months back I found another small pair of Dunk Hi's in a size 11 in kids and I created the "Coral Giraffes" (see below)

I told myself then that when I found a pair a few sizes smaller I'd keep the design very similar so with this piece I wanted to show my ability to create the same type of work that I usually create but on a smaller scale.Although they took me a few hours and a few days to complete the hard work paid off!

The NEW FlyKickz poster

Finally after of a few days of putting the idea together in my head, hitting the gym and spending 19 hours designing the kickz which I call "BEAST" I was ready to shoot the 2nd FlyKickz poster. From customs kickz to a custom outfit which I created by cutting a red tank top in half and altering it all to fit me, I was ready to capture the picture I would later use for my new poster. Even though I woke up sick that day and it was raining non stop outside all I can remember saying and thinking was "How do my Kickz look" and now I'm saying the same thing... so How do my kickz look?

After months of painting FlyKickz Sneaker Art, making reconstructed jewelry, and taking pictures I knew it was time to create something new on one of the things I luv most….Kickz!!!

I'm not the type of customizer who will paint any random thing on sneakers just to make money; I'm the type of artist who waits for an idea to come to me whether its a name for a design or image and then I build on it. I may have the idea in bits and pieces lingering around in my mind for days and then out of no where a simple conversation or a long train ride will make it all fall into place concept wise. Before I start painting I say to myself, I have to be better then my last, it has to be something worth painting & most of all I have to execute the concept right. I don't worry about what other sneaker customizers have released, how I can copy their style or what's hot at the moment. My goal, is to be better then I was yesterday and let it show through my work.

Create process Behind the sneaker:

A lot of times we as artist try to create projects so dope that even the naysayers would have to agree. We focus on style, colors, meaning and of course concepts. When I paint it's all about what's going on in my head at that very moment. I have to be able to make a mistake on the sneaker and within that very second have a backup plan to fix it before the paint dries. I knew this design was something I wanted to do instantly, not only because the Nike Dunk high is one of my favorite sneakers but because the concept worked so well. I always say that despite the way I look or dress it doesn't change the fact that I'm a BEAST at what I do, hence the name and design for the sneaker…lol. I want to continue to grow and work on my artistry but most of all continue to do what works best for me and FlyKickz.

With that being said I'd like to introduce you to my new FlyKickz customs... "Beasts"

NEW KICKZ: Coral Giraffes (The hybrid)

A fews days ago I had this idea in my head to paint on the smallest Dunk High's I could find although to my surprise finding a small Dunk High wouldn'tbe easy. I traveled through the city in 30 degree weather trying to find the perfect sneaker that would make my idea come together. After a few hours of walking in and out of sneaker stores I finally found a pair of white/obsidian (which would appear to some as navy blue) toddler Dunk Hi's size 11. Naturally I when I saw those Dunks hanging on the wall, my heart skipped a beat and I could barely breathe...lol OK that's a bit drastic but I definitely was relieved that I found what I was looking for.

THE IDEA:

I wanted to create a design that would becomea hybrid of my FishScale Coral Reefs and my Aqua Giraffes. I wanted to take two uncommon designs both of which I created and mesh them together creating a CUSTOM OFFSPRING.

After a few hours of painting (15 to say the least) 9 of those which was painted straight, I was super tired but the design was finally done. I finished the kickz at about 4am in the morning on Dec 2nd 2010 with a smile on my face because in the end those little Dunks were well worth it!

FlyKickz Goes to School

On Oct 28th,2010 a day after my birthday I was given the opportunity to talk with the kids of the Positive Impact after

school program at Washington Elementary in Trenton, NJ. Not only was I excited to be back in the city that I grew up in but I was excited to see what these amazing 3rd-5th graders ages 8-11 had in store for me, needless to say they're trying to take my job at a very young age...lol.

I'm sure none of them had ever heard of me or FlyKickz before but that was all the more reason for me to go and talk to them and show them was i do as an artist. More importantly I wanted to show them through my work that no matter what they want to be in life with determination and hard work it can be done. They asked me how I started designing sneakers so I told them about my elementary school days of drawing book report covers and pictures for class projects and how in high school I was always creating new things whether headbands or T-shirts. In many ways I always knew I wanted to own my business and be an artist. They asked me how I learned to paint so many different designs and what inspired me, so I told them about the impact my teachers and family had on me growing up and how every piece I create requires long hours and patience but I'm always allowing myself to learn new things everyday because a great artist is never done learning.

I could tell the kids were anxious to create their own work so I showed them the first
step I take when I create all of my sneakers I call it: The BluePrint

With every design that I create I have to come up with what I like to call my BLUEPRINT so I wanted to show the kids the first step in my process which is creating the idea. Naturally, I asked them about their favorite sneakers some told me about their converses, others mentioned their NIKE Blazers and of course a few Jordan's were thrown into the mix. Then it was my turn and with a big smile across my face I said "I'd like to introduce you to my favorite sneaker the NIKE DUNK HIGH" you would have sworn by the smile on my face that they were giving away candy that day, I guess I was just excited to know that after I left a few more kids would possibly love DuNKs as much as me.

I told them how the NIKE Dunk got its name, the year it was released and why I love them so much. I could see that despite our age differences we shared a bond which was our love for art and sneakers. Within minutes I was handing out Dunk High and Dunk Low templates for each kid to design, i passes out markers, crayons and pencils to each table so that could fill in the patterns and finally we were creating cool names for our work. I have to honestly say those kids gave me a run for my money and they made sure that before I left they each put in their sneaker orders and no worries they assured me that their moms would pay for it...lol ( kids are the coolest)

Overall, I enjoyed every moment of that day so to the kids at Washington Elementary I give you TWO THUMBS UP and thanks again for showing me such an amazing time!

Its my Birthday!

In honor of my birthday which is today I wanted to share with you a lot of things that I'm currently working on. This past Sunday I attended DXC NYC at Crash Mansion it was an awesome event and even greater turnout I was excited to be apart of that show. In fact I remember attending my first Dunkxchange in the summer of 07 right there at Crash Mansion. I stood outside for about an hour and I couldn't wait for those doors to open and to see all those wonderful kickz. I remember the feeling I got as I stood there in line wearing my newly painted Gucci Link Dunk lo's (even then I was wearing a fitted tee and fitted jeans because that's how I does it...lol) I was excited and nervous at the same time because no one had really seen my work before but I had fun that day. I finally became a vendor in the Winter of 08 and every since then I've been rocking with Dunkxchange and their awesome crowd.

So what's up Next for FlyKickz?

I have over 20-30 new things to paint in my art studio right now ranging from kickz to accessories and I look forward to painting each and every one no matter how long it takes... after all there's nothing good music and snacks can't cure! I also want to focus on collaborations, working on pieces for my own exhibition, do some live painting and more importantly just push FlyKickz to the limit as much as possible. In the end I want to "Just DO IT." I look forward to this journey over the next couple of months and I anticipate what I'll do next!

A few weeks ago while I was in my hometown Jersey I had the chance to work with Marca De Beatz once again. This time around we wanted to do something different, something that would capture me and my work and his great ideas as a photographer. We spent about 30 mins throwing around ideas for shoots until we found something that seemed almost perfect the around the way Bodegas which I've always loved and the cool graffiti that I can never seem to get enough of. 2 days of shooting and a few sit downs later a great project was created so Thank you again to Marca de Beatz for taking the time to work with me!

After a few days of laying around my art studio staring at my new Dunk Highs (which I naturally loved of course) trying to think of designs to create for the June FunkMaster Flex show it finally came to me. It wasn't until I stopped forcing myself to think of something new that the ideas finally popped into my head. I have to be honest all I had to start with was a few shapes and colors nothing more. I told myself I would just build the design as it came to me and all I had to do was trust it would all come together in the end. Thankfully, with a lot of patience and good music it all fell into place and this is what was created, I call them "This Way" and "Abstracts"...

Although many of my designs differ from one another one thing always remains the same and thats the circle embrossing symbol which can be found on all of my work since 07. I like to think of this symbol as the seal that makes my work come full circle.

No matter how simple or easy it may be I can never get myself to just throw my kickz on the table and call it a day and this event was no different. I wanted to create a display that reminded me the those kickz I use to see hanging from the telephone poles as a kid, which oddly enough always happened to be a converse sneaker I never saw many NIKEs. In my head I didn't know it wouldn't be that easy to create this custom display or that it would fill up the whole back seat of my car nor did I care. All I knew was I wanted to re create something people would instantly get when they saw it, the only difference was... I would be hanging pieces of ART instead of ran down kickz.

The FunkMaster flex event was a great opportunity for me to show people a glimpse of what I do as a customizer. I was given the chance to meet some great people new and old and show them a few pieces of my work which ranged from the newly added FlyKickz accessories to some of my favorite Dunks. I wanted to create a body of work that was very different in every piece that was created but still had something in common which was the embossed symbol I put on every sneaker I've ever painted. After more then 2 hrs of putting the booth together at the convention center I was glad it all came together just 5 mins before the doors opened and that it was all that I thought it would be. I want to thank everyone who took the time to stop by my booth and check out my custom work from the display that was built piece by piece to the kickz I spent days painting. I really appreciate all the positive feedback and the support that you continue to show FlyKickz so for that i give you all 2 THUMBS UP!

The Recap: Sneaker Con

This Past Saturday Sneaker Con took place in NYC...

I got up around 6am that morning got my Kickz Ready the " FishScale Coral Reefs" of course and hit the road. I arrived at 151 Sullivan Street around 1030a Ready to Go & Ready to Put in work! The event had a great turnout, not only did I get to show off a few customs, sell a few FlyKickz Posters & Customs but I got to Rock with 8and9 clothing and wear the "I am the Future" shirt which I still luv.

The vibe from the event was cool, the people were cool and the experience i give @ thumbs up! Thanks again to everyone who stopped by the table, took a few pics, said a few words and showed FlyKickz luv, its always appreciated. See you at the Next event!

On May 2nd after getting about an hour of sleep I headed to New York to be apart of STS "Sugar Tongue Slim" SOLE MUSIC video shoot. I have to admit I was excited and nervous at the same as I got off the train at about 830am, I remember thinking to myself I was just up at 4:30 at my parents house trying to create something to wear which wasn't easy because all I had was a pair of 3inch dull scissors to work with....Thanks mom setting me up for a long night...lol

Being around people wasn't really new to me. In the past couple of years I've gotten use to being surrounded by people at sneaker events, showcasing my customs and talking to them about what I did as a sneaker customizer but this was a little different in such an awesome way.

I had the opportunity to be apart of a great project that consisted of Good People & Good Music so shout out to everyone that came out on Sunday and had a cool time. I enjoyed every minute of that day not to mention I got to wear my FishScale Coral Reef Customs along with a few other new pair of Dunk Hi's that I absolutely luv. I also had a chance to visit West NYC located at 147 West 72nd Street & Flight Club located at 254 Greene St between 8th and Waverly both of which I had never been in before.

Side Note: Just seeing all those Dunks on that wall in Flight Club made me feel so good inside I think my sole's smiled...

I will definitely be checking out both stores again very soon!

P.S. To that bakery that I saw next to West NYC I shall return to eat some of those delicious looking cupcakes...

I finally got around to uploading and editing a few pics of kickz that I did back in NOV-Dec something different but fun. You may also notice that all the Sneakers are DUNKS!

"FlyChickz"

With this design i wanted to create something that reminded me of me. For the most part every time I attend events I'm usually rocking a pair of Dunk Hi's so i wanted to paint a design of just that a bunch of Fly Chickz rockin FlyKickz. If you notice in the design the girls are Rockin a pair of kickz similar to the actual sneaker. (Designed Dec 09)

" Aqua Giraffes"

After having these black Dunk lo's for almost 4 months I thought it was about time to design them. Although black kickz aren't the easiest to design I was able to come up with a design using one of my favorite prints ( the Giraffe print) and put a couple of colors together that I didn't already have on a pair of kickz. The design itself is made to be simple but I wanted the swoosh to have all the action hence the Bronze paint. (Designed Nov 09)

After about 5 hrs of painting front and back I finally finished designing the New FlyKickz "Gucci Links on Fire" clutch bag to match one of my favorite customs the "Gucci Links on Fire" Dunk High's.

With this new idea I wanted to incorporate something to my work that I myself luv to wear. To me there's nothing like rockin a Fly Pair of Kickz with a nice clutch to match. I hope the ladies like the new ideas and as for the fellas remember you can always get your girl a fly bag to match your FlyKickz!

Contemporary Street Wear Fashion Event at ATMOS NYC

On Feburary 12th I got a chance to be apart of the Contemporary Street Wear Fashion Week event sponsored by Good Wood NYC, Frank 151, The Source & Life Time Music Group thanks to my good dude Nice of NiceInHarlem Productions. The event was held uptown in Harlem at the World famous Japanese Street Wear Boutique Atmos NYC Located at 203 W 125th Street. The venue itself was definitely a good choice just being able to be surrounded by dope kickz, a cool crowd and good music always works for me, so thumbs up to everyone who attended the event, checked out my work and most of all came out and had a great time. We must do this again!

The Recap: Dunkxchange NYC Dec 19th

I arrived at Crash Mansion in NYC at 9:30a determined to get the spot I wanted to set up my table inside. Like me, people were already outside the building waiting in their cars for the doors to open at 1030a. Although it was cold out that day and snow was in the forecast that didn't stop guys young and old from wearing their freshest kickz with a warm North Face (U gotta respect their fly) and me from wearing my Fitted blue jeans, my laced up black tank (that I of course made with a pair of Silver Tip Black flat laces) and my FishScale Coral Reefs

The doors finally opened at 1030a, the tables were set up by 1130a and once we got the ok to enter the building to pick a table I darted to the back with pieces of my display in hand and got the spot I wanted...lol

This time around I brought a few new things with me to Dunkxchange like my new FlyKickz customs "FlyChickz" and my "PassPorts" Dunk Hi's and of course my FlyKickz Poster.

The FlyKickz Posters finally Arrived!

After waiting almost a week for the posters to arrive and spending days trying to find a photographer it all came together....

This past November I spent days trying to find a photographer that would understand my vision and concept for the FlyKickz poster. This poster was unlike anything I had ever done before, for one I wasn't wearing much...lol. I take pictures with my kicks on at events all the time but this time my focus was not only on marketing the work I create as FlyKickz but marketing myself as the customizer. A lot of times when I'm at events people forget that I customize all the work that they see even if I am wearing a shirt that says "I am FlyKickz" the question remains the same, who painted these sneakers. I guess they may have expected to see a man when they see kickz but it's quite obvious that I'm just a Chick who happens to luv customizing Kickz.

For the Poster I wanted to create a concept that focused on me and my work. After thinking about the idea for a few days it all came full circle when I saw a picture that Stacy Dash had done in this magazine which was exactly what I wanted, I figured add some kickz change a few things and this could definitely work for me.

(For Concept Purposes I edited the original magazine image and included the FlyKickz "FishScale Coral Reefs" and Paint brushes, this is not the original image and in no way an actual photograph)

I have to admit I had to take a moment to think about whether or not this concept was right for me but if there's one thing I've learned it's that sometimes, you have to create your own path and do things the best way you know how. It was funny showing those close to me including my dad what I was up too but once they saw my vision and how I was ready to go all in they gave me their support 100%. I'm excited to show everyone the finished product which I'll be debuting at Dunkxchange NYC Dec 19th @ Crash Mansion so if your in the area be sure to stop by and check out the event, the kickz and purchase a FlyKickz poster!

On November 23rd I got a chance to shoot with Photographer Ayo of Marca de Beatz in Jersey. Not only did I have a cool experience but we captured the poster image in 4mins along with a few other pictures. I went home with all my images including the finished product that had all the graphics and text I wanted after only being in the studio for about an hour. Not only is Ayo very professional but he gets the job done ASAP . All I had to do was say what I wanted and within a few moments it was done. I definitely appreciated him taking the time to hear my concept and getting the work to me so fast because I called him like 20 times before the shoot asking all these questions and wanting all these answers which I politely received. On the Hunt for a Female Photographer?

I know its been a while since I wrote on my Blog. October was a fun and busy, I did Dunkxchange at the beginning of the month, brought some new kickz, finished some of my college classes attended a few October festivities and I turned 24!

Now it's time for me to start the FlyKickz designs and ideas I've been brainstorming about for some time and I'm ready. New kickz, a Fly display and of course the FlyKickz poster are definitely on the Horizon . Although I'm excited about the projects I have to find a talented photographer who can make it all fall into place creatively and artistically. After thinking about it for a few days I decided it would be dope to have a Female photographer. I've searched ModelMayhem, Myspace, Facebook as well as a few other places and my hunt continues but I'm sure it'll come full circle.
I want to work with someone who enjoys their work, has fun with it and most of all has the drive to be the best at what they do. If that's you or you know someone who may be just that feel free to Email me, Aim me, or call me and lets make it happen!

RECAP: Dunkxchange NYC OCT 4th

This past Sunday I got a chance to showcase my work at the Dunkxchange/Holy Grail Benefit Concert in NYC and represent with 8and9 clothing. It was def a cool event the giveaways were crazy, the vibe was cool, the music was good (thanks to the DJ, the performances were on point (Saigon did his thing), Dro Pesci the host of the event had that crazy energy that kept us going no matter how tired we were and the people who all attended and participated in the event were great which is always a plus in my book.

I arrived at the Orensanz event center located at 172 Norfolk ST where DXC was being held at about 11:50am because the traffic over there was insane. I was feeling cool as ever rocking my leather tights, my black 8and9 tshirt that read "Real Heads Rock Their Kicks" courtesy of 8and9 clothing and although I wasn't wearing any FlyKickz customs or a pair of Dunk Hi's (because I didn't have a pair that matched) which was all so new to me, I managed to find a fly pair of Adidas Decade HI that matched perfectly. Early that day while I was in Brooklyn with the Family getting dressed the only debate I was having with myself was whether or not I wanted to leave my Adidas tag on my new kickz (of course I did) while everyone else was wondering about their day...lol. I was ready to go!

Overall my day was filled with hard work but always fun nonetheless, I definitely enjoyed the grind. Not only was it a good way to start the month of October off (because my Birthday's on the 27th) but I got a chance to network with 8and9 clothing, watch the cool performances, showcase my work, chop it up with a few people I know, do an interview with the fly guys over at IntheLooP, flicked it up a little (thanks for the pic Techie), meet a lot of new and old great people and most of all break in my new Kickz!

I had so much fun being apart of this project despite the fact that it was about 90 something degrees outside as we exited SoleFood NYC and headed down Lispenard St trying to find the perfect spot with just the right lighting and background to take the flicks.

I must admit when I got the call the night before I didnt have a clue what I was gonna wear but I did what I normally did in outfit emergencies grabbed a pair of scrissors and started cutting shyt up...lol. I just wanted to be comfortable in what I was wearing and most of all have fun with it... you can never go wrong with a White tank. Normally I don't wear pink but the top went so well with my Gazelles (Adidas) so I couldn't resist, not to mention the Hot pink New Era MLB NY Yankees 59Fifty Hat I picked was just the right match (thanks to Niarobi)

We knocked it out the box in about 20mins thanks to the cool photographer and motivated person that Nairobi is and of course I helped. I had alot of fun and I look forward to working on more projects with Strictly Fitteds.

Cargo Tradeshow July 20th and 21st Recap

I woke up at 5:30 am on July 20th to begin my trip to NY. I arrived about 10 am by train wearing my blue denim jeans, a white tank and Black J’s. I pulled my green suitcase with my right hand and carried my custom display stand in my left. It was nice outside that Monday when I arrived in comparison to Jan when I did the first Cargo Trade Show sneaker battle. I walked through Grand Central Station for about 5 minutes thinking about what the competition would be like and how the crowd would respond to my work, I wondered if they’d understand my concepts. Despite all that thinking I was ready nonetheless…

Day 1
10:30a… I finally got off the 6 train on Bleecker St and headed towards the St. Patrick’s Center where the Cargo Trade show was taking place. I was the first customizer to arrive and set up which was perfect because it takes me a while to arrange my display. Everything was neatly packed from my flyers, stickers and business cards to my led lights, portfolio and Guest Book (which I take to every event).I slowly unpacked my FishScale Coral Reefs and my Gucci Links on Fire Dunks as if any sudden moments would ruin my work. However, I knew after 50 hrs of painting and prepping no sudden movements would cause my product to crack, chip or peel. After setting up my display I waited for the other customizers Revive Customs, Rebel Aire, Mateo, Inkie and Peseo to arrive. Every sneaker each artist added to the table was artistic, neat and all very different which I liked. Once all the kickz were in place I took off my Black J’s and slipped into my Geisha Girl Dunks Hi’s and got ready to have fun and go to work!

Day 2
I woke up around 7am after getting 1 hr of sleep from Day 1, it was raining outside and I knew I didn’t have an umbrella, but I didn’t let a few rain drops stop me. I headed to the Cargo Tradeshow around 12p dressed in all black rocking my Kiss My Kickz Dunk Hi’s, although I told myself it was time to retire them (I love those dunks).

I walked through the front door excited about getting another chance to chill with the crowd, the vendors and anyone that stopped to check out my work and the sneaker battle. Even though my voice was hoarse from the day prior and I was a little tired I took a small sip of my 5 hr energy drink (which probably didn’t really help) and went to work.
After 15hrs of being at the 2 day event the winner was announced at a 730p on July 21st and when they said “Winner of the Cargo Tradeshow for the second time in a row” all I could do was smile. The feeling I felt regardless of how big or small the event seemed to some was amazing to me. I went hard with my work and gave it my all & in the end it paid off!

This event was a great experience, not just because I won 1st place but because the people who threw the event, attended and participated in the sneaker battle were great. It was a pleasure to be apart of the Cargo TradeShow again…

All three of these sneakers were painted for the FunkMaster Flex Sneaker Battle that I did on 6/27 in Edison, NJ. Each sneaker had its own concept way before I even started painting the actual sneaker, which is the way I do all my kickz.

FishScale Coral Reefs
These Kicks were derived from a concept that I had of doing something aquatic that would allow me to use both fish scales and dark coral reefs. With this concept I was able to incorporate fish tanks and Siamese fighting fish into my actual display. I wanted the design to be something dark yet fly in sense that it would still stand out.

Gucci Links on Fire

This design allowed my to re-visit the first customs that I created in 2007 that actually came out right. When I first created the Gucci links back in 07 is was so that it could match the tat I had designed to go around my left wrist. The day I finished that design was the day I fell in luv with those dunks not only because I used the right paint and technique but because that was the longest time I had ever spent painting in one spot on a pair of kickz. That day I learned the meaning of patience and I still wear those kickz till this day.

This time around was a little different I wanted to take a bright sneaker that I might not normally wear and transform it to something more FlyKickz, which to me meant darken up the bright color and re-visit an old concept yet I had to still manage to keep a little of the original sneaker (the ice red sole) hence Gucci Links on Fire was Born…

With all my work I try to do whatever works for me, I don’t think about it much I just wait till the concept hits me and I build on it. Most importantly, I always research my concepts to make sure it has never been done before. There’s no need in creating something cool to only find out, its been done. In the end I say, think about it for a minute and go crazy with it but never over do it!

On June 27th I attended, networked and showed off my kicks at the FunkMaster Flex event in Edison, NJ. A lot of people checked out my work and showed me so much luv and I definitely appreciated that. That day I rocked that shyt, I didn’t stop talking and taking flicks until my voice went horse and I went home tired after being up for almost 12 hrs straight. I didn’t win the custom sneaker battle that day but if you ask me honestly if I should have, I’ll tell you straight up with out a doubt I had that. I painted for over 60 hours solo with no squad to back me up and I came hard. Despite the outcome of not winning I’ve come to understand it is what it is. I’ll pick up the pieces and keep it moving and no matter what some may say about this rookie or new kid on the block I go hard...

BEING SEXY IN YOUR KICKZ 101

Some Chicks say they can’t wear kickz because they love their 5 inch stilettos but that’s because for years they’ve been wearing them wrong. They may think it’s not lady like to wear kickz because they can't maintain their Swag in flats. I must admit, that even though I stand at a mean 5’10 I too love to rock my fly stilettos with a fresh pedicure of course. Not all chicks can wear kickz the right way or even appreciate a fresh pair of kickz so we must show them how to do it right and look Sexy doing it...

They'll never understand that it doesn't matter if we're wearing kickz or stilettos our Swag remains the same because our confidence is always at a high level. We wear kickz that fall in love with us everytime we slide our feet into them. Kickz that scream I love the way she’s wearing me everytime we move our hips in them. People may say we’re tomboys or girly girls cause we rock our kickz this way but the fact remains the same...

Delivering the Pink Striped Giraffe's

I began my trip at 830 am
Arrived in NYC by 11
Walked in 80 degree weather in my Air Max 90’s

Hopped on the B train, then headed to the MilkShake Kicks showroom

It was about 1pm when I arrived at the showroom wearing my Celtic Knots custom Air Max 90’s to meet with Courtney (owner of MilkShake Kicks). With the new Pink Striped Giraffe customs I designed in hand I could already tell this was going to be a good meeting. We sat and talked for a few about Milkshake Kicks highlighting my customs in their showroom and potential work for the future. I shared a few of my ideas and goals for FlyKickz and I got a chance to check out some of the new merchandise from Milkshake Kicks as well. I can definitely say when you meet with MS you can expect to be able to speak your mind and have a fun time doing it and I look forward to meeting again!

FlyKickz Pink Striped Giraffe's x MilkShake Kicks

On May 28th, 2009 @ 430 pm I got a call from MilkShake Kicks about showcasing the "Pink Striped Giraffe's", customs I created for them back in March. The FlyKickz customs which I created especially for their company will be featured in their showroom as a highlighted piece. Since this will be the first time that their seeing the customs in person aside from the emailed pictures I'm excited to hear what they think.

After all the emails and phone conversations I'll finally be delivering the sneakers in person to the MilkShake Kicks showroom in NYC on June 2nd 2009 at 1pm. I'm very excited that the company chose my Pink Striped Giraffe's to be highlighted in their showroom for future visitors to see. I look forward to meeting with MilkShake Kicks on Tuesday and I anticipate the outcome of great things to come... Stay tuned for more info on the Pink Striped Giraffe's!

In Love with My Dunks...

Once again I’m taking that good Hour and a half drive heading back to the City (NYC) and this time I’m bringing back with me My New Dunk Hi’s. I must admit I’m a Nike Dunk HI type of chick although I’ll rock just about anything as long as it fits my style. I’m not fixated on prices or what's hot at the moment I just wear what I like.

These kicks although they seem simple and plain made my heart skip a beat. All that white leather canvas just screaming out for me to customize them (the FlyKickz way of course). The minute we met it was love at first sight, until every store I went to said they didn’t have my size...thats when I lost all composure...lol. This week however I’m hoping things will be better and I’ll get to take them home with me, but I guess I’ll have to cross my fingers and hope for the best.

A week in Miami, Fort Lauderdale and Weston, FL...
I chilled on the beach, listened to a woman try to convince me to buy a timeshare on the spot (didn’t work), visited the family, studied for mid terms, Parasailed 600 ft in the air, did a few other things at Aloha Watersports in Fort Lauderdale , Rode Go Karts for the 1st time & won and I attempted to hit the gym. Overall I enjoyed my trip, not only did I chill but I handled some FlyKickz business along the way. I got a chance to check out a few custom sneaker spots in Miami for research of course, I want to be the best at what I do so location is never an issue...lol. This trip was exciting, relaxing and most of all I learned a few things along the way…Sometimes you have to just chill & Enjoy the moment…

Milkshake Kicks x FlyKickz = a Collaboration in the Making

Creating an idea comes easier to some then others and for me it's no different. I wait for the concept to hit me even if it takes days, I never rush the thought process I just sit and wait. Once something sparks my interest I go for it, start to paint and hope for the best. With this design I wanted to do something I liked such as the giraffe print but I also wanted it to catch people’s attention hence the Gold. Overall the process was fun and def something I look forward to creating again in my size… I def need a pair…lol

Its Crazy how this company has the audacity to act like it doesn't resemble my work. They’ve met me, conversed with me and even added FlyKickz to their Myspace friends list. To be honest nothing in their collection ever look like this and the fact that they bit off a pair of limited edition Dunk Lo’s and tried to put them on a pair of AF1 Mid’s was proof enough, I had biters on ma hands. Mr. Business Man of the company tried to tell me weeks ago “We created this Custom Shit” this dude has forgotten how to be humble and obviously hasn’t done his research. Customs have been around since back in the day when shell Toes were being filled in with markers to laces being changed. I agree they helped make it popular but I refuse to label them as the originators. I don’t dig what they did nor do I respect it. Forget paying Homage to your old school career when truth is, a true artist would have tried to reach out to me and see how I felt about my concept being jacked. I understand you trying revive your career but it definitely won’t start here….
You say you've never seen my kickz even though you've been to my webpage, said you liked my work, and wished me much success... I don't believe it, you took my work and tried to remix it, ridiculous. This isn't personal its business Babyyyyyyyyyyy!

Winning a competition feels good I won’t lie. The work you put in to make it all fall into place never goes unnoticed if you hustle hard. In January I had my 1st sneaker battle at the Cargo Tradeshow. After spending 20-25 hrs on two pair of sneakers, waking up at 530am both days to travel to NYC, I was horse and tired but it was well worth it. Everyday I saw that shiny gold trophy I wanted it more (Women and shiny things...) I met a lot of people, networked like crazy and the other finalist in the sneaker Battle showed me luv and I appreciated that, so thank you. When I won the feeling was incredible, it wasn’t the win to be honest that caught me; it was the thrill of the experience. The rush from the battle just left me wanting more and the picture in the Vibe spot was definitely a good look…

I’m Dez, I'm 23 years old and the Owner and Designer of FlyKickz which is a sneaker customizing company I started late 06. I’m originally from Trenton, NJ. I moved to New York when I was 17 and I’ve lived in almost every borough of NY over those past 6 yrs and loved every moment of it. I rode the train late at night and walked 30 blocks on a nice day for a pair of earrings and never complained about it. I’m currently painting in a new state but when I need my dose of Art, Kicks & Fashion I’m only an hour train ride away from NY and a 3hr drive from the place I call home…Jersey

It’s time to start the BLOG finally and recap all the past events, projects and future collaborations and I’m ready. I've been doing this for a minute now, FlyKickz for over 2 yrs and being Dez for 23. No more creative barriers on what I say or do, I left that behind.
